Herbert
L. Knight, 88, of Stuart, Fla. and longtime Ipswich resident, died May
29, 2006, after a brief stay at the Salerno Bay Manor in Stuart, and
following a long illness. He was the husband of Laurel A. (Gibbons-Miller)
Knight.
Born in Newburyport on January 11, 1918, son of the late Herbert L. and
Marion (Flanders) Knight, he was a 1936 graduate of Newburyport High School.
Following high school, he was employed as a builder at the former
Robinson’s Shipyard of Ipswich. During World War II, he served in the
Merchant Marine Service, receiving veteran status as warrant officer, U.S.
Coast Guard.
Following his honorable discharge, Mr. Knight and his late wife, Thelma
(Davis) Knight, made Ipswich their home. Mr. Knight was a self-employed
carpenter and builder. During the 1960s, he had worked for several years
with Connolly Brothers Builders of Beverly Farms and returned to
self-employment at H.L. Knight and Knight Enterprises.
He
enjoyed horseback riding on Crane Beach, Bradley Palmer and Willowdale parks
and was generous in his support of the local 4-H Club in the 1970s, hosting
horse shows on his Heartbreak Road property. He enjoyed clamming, fishing,
sailing and motoring his boats.
He
loved dancing, dining in and dining out and will be remembered by his family
and friends for his cheerful nature, concern, love, passion and grace. Mr.
Knight was a former member of the Ascension Memorial Church of Ipswich, the
Ipswich Bay Yacht Club, VFW Post 1093, Ipswich, VFW Post 10132, Hobe Sound,
Fla. and the Miles Grant Country Club, Stuart, Fla.
In
1991, he married Laurel Miller. The couple resided at Bayview Road where Mr.
Knight moored his cruiser, “Enterprise.” His sloop, “Augury,” was a longtime
picturesque addition to Lobster Cove, Annisquam. In the 1980s and 1990s, Mr.
Knight and his wife traveled to Italy, Corfu in Greece, and the Caribbean
Islands. In 2001 the couple moved to Stuart, Fla., enjoying the southern
climate.
In
addition to his beloved wife, Laurel, Mr. Knight is survived by two
daughters, Patricia (Knight) Campbell and her husband, Kevin, of Ipswich and
Deborah (Knight) Porter and her husband, William K. Fowler III, of
Topsfield; one stepdaughter, Michelle Miller Ferland and her husband,
Richard, of Garner, N.C.; six grandchildren, Kristin (Campbell) Glowacki and
her husband, Christopher, of Rowayton, Conn., Heather (Campbell) Curry and
her husband, Christopher, of Ipswich, Justin Green of Jackson Hole, Wyo.,
and Courtney Green, Teal and Brooke Porter, all of Topsfield; and two
step-grandchildren, Chante and Felicity Ferland, both of Garner, N.C.
His
great grandchildren are Lily Waldron of Brookline and Rowayton, Conn.,
Albert, Herbert and Stella Glowacki, all of Rowayton,
Conn., Dominick Hough of Ipswich and Beverly and Claire Curry of Ipswich.
Mr.
Knight is survived by two sisters, Annie Piecewicz of Amesbury and Marjorie
Martin of Newburyport. He was the brother of the late Donald Knight and
Janet Tolman, both formerly of Newbury and William Knight, formerly of
Newbury.
A
funeral service with military honors will be held graveside, Saturday, July
15 at 11 a.m. at Cowles Memorial Cemetery, Ipswich. Family and friends are
respectfully welcomed. Arrangements are under the direction of the
Whittier-Porter Funeral Home of Ipswich.
