William F.MacKenzie HAMILTON - William (Bill) Forrester MacKenzie always had a new joke to tell and a camera in his hand. In the past few years, he regularly shared these loves at Henderson’s Coffee Shop and at the dinner table. Mr. MacKenzie, a lifelong resident of S.Hamilton, MA, died unexpectedly on Sunday, December 27, 2009 at his house. He was 65 years old. He leaves behind his wife of 42 years Maridia MacKenzie, and daughters, Amy MacKenzie of Portland, OR and Cindy Black and grandchildren Austin and Kailyn Black of Ipswich, MA. He was predeceased by his son Brian MacKenzie. Given his sense of humor, he was appropriately born on April 1, 1944, in S. Hamilton, MA to William and Eleanor MacKenzie (deceased), he had two sisters, Susan Lewis of Inverness, FL, and Jane Jenkins of Gloucester, MA and one brother, David MacKenzie (deceased). He is also survived by his mother-in-law, Lois Jernigan with whom he had a very close relationship. As a cherished uncle of thirteen nieces and nephews and their children, he was highly involved in their lives. The door was always open for a warm meal or a soft bed. Prior to retiring, he was the Chief of Police of a local town for about 11 years. Before becoming chief, he was a police officer for 24 years. He is remembered by many who attended Hamilton-Wenham Regional Middle and High School as the DARE officer. In addition, he served as President of the Essex County Chiefs of Police Association; member of the MA Chiefs of Police Association and Former President of the Hamilton-Wenham Rotary Club. He served in the United States Marine Corp for 4 years which included a tour of duty in Vietnam. He was honorably discharged in 1967. Mr. MacKenzie was a graduate of High Mowing School in Wilton, NH. He received a Bachelors’ degree from Salem State, Salem, MA and Masters of Criminal Justice from Anna Maria College, Paxton, MA. All his life, he had an unquenchable thirst for knowledge. He was an avid reader of classical literature, an expert on the MacKenzie family tree and student of American history. He gave retirement a good name. He became a freelance travel photographer and journalist who worked for seven travel companies in Latin America. There are several published books of his travel photography. At least twice a month, he won “photo of the day” for the submissions of his photographs to the daily contest on www.bestfoto.com. He has been interviewed and substantially quoted for National Geographic’s Traveler Magazine. Plenty Magazine published his pictures and interviewed him for an article about Nicaragua. The Latincoming Alliance website with his pictures won the travel category award at the ILTM Luxury Tourism Fair in Cannes, France. Numerous schools and organizations have benefited from his lectures on photography and international travels. A memorial celebration of Mr. MacKenzie’s life will be at the Campbell – Lee, Moody, Russell Funeral Home, 525 Cabot Street, Beverly (North Beverly location) on Thursday, December 31, 2009 at 5 pm. We just learned that Nancy Matthew's mother passed away on January 22, 2009. The write-up below is from the funeral home web site. Lillian
(Strong) Matthews,
a longtime resident of Woburn, passed away quietly at home, surrounded by
her family, early Thursday morning, January 22nd. The beloved wife of the
late John Matthews, she was ninety-one years of age. Born in Somerville,
Lillian was the daughter of the late Joe and Josephine (Kirkland) Strong.
When she was eight years of age, her family moved from Somerville to
Woburn. After her mother passed away at a rather young age, Lillian was
raised by her father and her paternal grandparents. Throughout her
lifetime, she also maintained a very special relationship with her
father’s sister, “Aunt Lottie”. Lillian was educated in the Woburn Public Schools and was a graduate of Woburn High School. For a while after graduating, she worked, as many young women in that era, as a domestic, caring for two children. In 1938, Lillian met and married her beloved husband, John. Making their home in Woburn, Lillian devoted herself fully to John and their three children. They enjoyed traveling locally and took day boat trips to Nantasket Beach. Christmas, which Lillian always hosted until later years, was a very special time in the Matthews household. There was the annual Christmas shopping spree at the mall completed by a visit to the pie shop. In later years, Lillian’s attention was focused on her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She played games and went swimming with them and accompanied her son and daughter to their school activities and sporting events. Additionally, she was a very active and dedicated member of the Trinity Church in Woburn. Lillian was perpetually in motion, whether it was cutting the lawn or shoveling snow. She will always be remembered for her love of family, her youthful outlook, her abundance of energy and her eagerness to keep going. In addition to her husband, John Matthews, Lillian was predeceased by her son, Charles Matthews, who passed away in June of 2007 and her brother, Arthur Strong. She is lovingly survived by her children, Nancy Matthews of Woburn, John Matthews and his wife Mary of FL, her grandchildren, Lori Hughes and her husband, Jeff, of NH, Lisa Montgomery and her husband, Bob, of Littleton and John Matthews and his wife Angela, of GA and two great grandchildren, Evan and Allyson Montgomery. Attorney Marguerite H. (Mosher) Dolan, age 89, died at the Bertram House in Swampscott early Wednesday morning, February 25th, following a long illness.
One of five children, she was born and raised in Greenfield, MA, the daughter of the late Fred A. and Helen V. (Mills) Mosher. Her family moved to New York City when she was a teenager where she graduated from Julia Richmond High School and attended Columbia University, studying journalism. Mrs. Dolan returned to Greenfield and became a reporter for the Greenfield Recorder-Gazette.
She married the late Robert P. Dolan, Jr. in June of 1946. For many years she was a mother and homemaker and raised their five children. Mrs. Dolan pursued her interest in journalism, writing novels, plays and magazine articles. Later, she worked as a law librarian for the Franklin County Law Library for over 10 years where she became interested in and made the decision to pursue a law career. During this time she clerked for Attorney Sebastian Ruggeri and, on her own, studied for the Bar. She is believed to be the last person in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts to be admitted to the practice of law without attending law school under the old practice of “reading for the bar.”
After passing the bar and commencing her law practice in 1971 at age 51, she worked with Attorney Ruggeri until establishing her own firm in Turners Falls, later becoming partners for a time with Thomas Simons, Esq. She became an attorney at a time when women lawyers were a rarity, and did much to mentor and encourage other women in their pursuit of careers in the law. She retired in 1990 at age 71.
Marguerite loved outdoor activities such as hiking, swimming, tennis and picnics. She was an intrepid traveler who relished her many trips to exotic places.
Attorney Dolan is survived by five children; Kathryn Lien of Swampscott, Constance LaFleur, Anne Dolan-Wieting and her husband John Wieting of Durango, CO, Robert Dolan, III, and his companion Michele Webster of Brattleboro, VT and Joan Dolan of Springfield, MA; one grandchild, Erik Lien, of Boston, MA and many nieces and nephews.
